Cambrian Chords Audition Process

The purpose of the audition is to observe your learning capability and ability to sing in harmony with other parts. We aim to assess how well you can learn new music and blend your voice within an ensemble.

The audition is simply a snapshot of where you are currently and allows us to take note of your strengths and areas for improvement. We also want you to feel comfortable during the audition, so please know that it is an easy-going, relaxed process.

Your audition will be scheduled for two to three weeks after your first visit.

Song Selection:

Choose one of the two short songs provided. Please listen to both, and choose which song you think suits you best. One of our regular repertoire songs, 'Hello Mary Lou' is also available to download.  We encourage you to learn this song alongside your audition song, so you can get the most out of your rehearsals with us whilst you prepare for your audition.

The songs are:

  1. Let Me Call You Sweetheart’
  2. ‘The Story of The Rose (Heart of My Heart)’

Please download the sheet music, and the tracks labelled with your voice part to get started. These tracks have your voice part dominant in the mix for ease of learning.

Audition:

Your audition will be held on a rehearsal night in a private space, with the musical director(s) and section leader present. Your chosen song will be sung in quartet with other members of the chorus. Multiple run throughs are allowed to help you ease into the feeling of singing in an ensemble.

After your audition, you’ll be informed as soon as possible of a pass/re-audition. In the case of a re-audition, constructive feedback will be provided, and a re-audition will be scheduled for no longer than two weeks after the initial audition date.

Preparation tips:

  1. Practice regularly, at least once a day. Try to do as much listening as you do singing along to the track. Aural learning is as important as physically singing along, this allows the song to settle in.
  2. Follow along with the sheet music. Even if you’re not a music reader, this a great way to get a feel for how everything fits together, the direction the song moves, the lyrics, and how musical phrases begin and end.
  3. Perform to your friends and family. This is a very useful exercise for getting used to putting yourself under a bit of pressure.
  4. Don’t hesitate to ask about anything you’re not sure of. Our music team aremore than willing to help as much as possible with anything you need.

We’re excited to hear your audition and appreciate your interest in joining the Cambrian Chords. Good luck!
